Help UNIFEM take a stand against the abuse and violence on women

31 Oct

Did you know that one in 3 women may suffer from abuse and violence in her lifetime? This is an appalling human rights violation.

United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) is having a signature drive for their Say NO To Violence Against Women Campaign. Please help UNIFEM to attain 1 million signatures for this movement by November 24, to take a stand and build a community around this important cause. On November 25, UNIFEM and Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman will present these signatures to the UN Secretary General.

Visit http://www.rocketxl.com/unifem to receive your own personal widget and join our online community of supporters. Also, if you have a blog or are part of Facebook and other social networking sites, promoting this cause will help out as well.

Help Navy Lt Andy Baldwin raise $2000 in 24 hours for charity

31 Oct

Washington’s newest “It Boy” Andy Baldwin has been hitting the charity circuit since he moved into the area. The former ABC reality show star from the Bachelor, who definitely fits the mold as an Officer and a Gentleman, is actively using his popularity for good by participating, not just attending, charity events to raise money for some pretty awesome organizations. Just this past Saturday, Andy ran in the Marine Corps marathon. As if that were not enough, he is going to run the New York City Marathon this Sunday all in the name of children. He is tring to reach $2,000 but the more he raises, the more money goes to the Armory Foundation, which runs the busiest after-school sports location in New York City and helps underserved and deserving track and field athletes take the high road to higher education. The Armory College Prep program does a great job in keeping hundreds of young runners off and on track to a more productive future.

Please read his note below:

Dear Friends:

Please help me run marathons back to back for charity. I did Marine Corps marathon on Sunday and am willing to run NYC marathon this weekend. I know it’s nuts but to help the kids of NY stay on track I’ll do it. Just need to raise $2k in the next 24 hrs. Every little bit counts. I’ll match your donation and write your name on the honorary NYC Armory Track and Field Foundation tshirt!

Use the link https://www.active.com/donate/TeamArmoryTrack/ABaldwi19 to donate. The website is secure, fast and easy to use. At the website you will be able to choose an amount to donate and receive email confirmation of your donation.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The queens take over Dupont Circle

30 Oct

On a cold and windy Tuesday night in our nation’s capitol, thousands of people have lined the streets to catch a glimpse at one of the most talked about races in the city. No, not the Marine Corps marathon. It’s the Drag Queen High Heel race in Dupont Circle that has brought this crowd into the bitingly windy streets. This year’s Drag Queen High Heel Race, like the previous ones, was a festive one. Hundreds of men dressed in drag, some scantily clad in nothing but a bikini or a skimpy dress and mile high heels are getting ready to prove to the women in this city that boys can have fun in heels too.

Many queens this year made sure to flex their political muscle in election regalia. Some wore DC Councilwoman Carol Schwartz outfits, others in Palin costumes. Then there were those advocating DC Voting rights and a set of queens lined up in a row to spell the word OBAMA on their bums. Even elected officials joined in the fun. District of Columbia mayor Adrian Fentry and Council member Jack Evans made an apearance, took pictures with the crowds and even took the time to chat a bit with the Glamazon Diaries. Mayor Fenty, one of my absolute favorites, was handsomely dressed in a suit, black wool trench coat and his signature newspaper boy cap. When asked what he would dress up as had he been in the Drag Queen High Heel Race, he smiled broadly and said, “I would definitely wear a nice black suit, a black coat and a hat….Oh! and an Obama sticker.”

A special thank you goes out to WTOP’s Markette Smith for passing along such great video footage of the race and another goes out to Mel Magilton for the fun photos of the queens in all their glory.

The Evolution of Sarah Palin

30 Oct

Whether you love her or hate her, no one can deny that vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is one fabulous looking chica. The Alaska governor and Republican VP nom. has been a sensation from day one in her fashion choices. Sure she’s spent over $150,000 on her new digs and a lot of people are up in arms over “wasting” money that can be used for advertising or grassroots efforts for the campaign. Palin and her campaign team know that appearance is everything and this Alaska mama had to change her image to fit in with the Republican agenda. I say $150,000 is money well spent at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.

I am not sure she has a stylist, she must because pictures of her life in Alaska paint a really fashionably challenged Palin, but she is making all the right moves with her wardrobe. Her look is fresh and sophisticated. Her color choices are bold yet manage to keep her image of a mother and a fighter in the public eye. She seems to be a big fan on the cropped Jackie O style jackets, which really work for her. It’s a career look that many women strive for yet never achieve. Take a couple of cues from Palin’s post convention wardrobe to get some work appropriate attire ideas.

Interview with Teen Vogue Fashion Stylist Danica Wilcox

28 Oct

I had the opportunity of interviewing Teen Vogue Fashion Stylist Danica Wilcox at the Teen Vogue “Young Hollywood” Launch Party at CUSP in Georgetown two weeks ago. The uber stylish Wilcox was all smiles as she unveiled some of falls must have pieces including a hot little YSL number that every fashionista in the room was coveting. She took the time to chat with me a bit about DC fashion and some of trends for the upcoming season.

Who’s got more style: Washingtonians or New Yorkers?
From what I’ve seen in the last couple of days, Washingtonians are dress more sophisticated and not as preppy as I had imagined. The women are definitely fashion forward and are very much invested in fashion.

The Gossip Girls trend is big now, especially the Blair Waldorf look. What do you think of it?
The look should retire. It’s not affordable for the masses.

Favorite piece in your closet?
It would have to be a men’s white shirt. I have about 10 of them.

First designer item you ever bought?
Vintage YSL. Still have it and wear

Who is the best designer out there today?
Fashion forward would be Alber Albaz or Nicholas Ghesquire. As for young designers, I think Acne designs an amazing clothing line.

If you could spend the day with one fashion icon living or dead, who would it be?
Martin Margiela because no one has ever seen him.

This wouldn’t be Washington if I didn’t ask you a political question. Which first lady’s style is more appealing to women and why?
Michelle Obama she is very hip but stil relates to the average woman. She wears Erickson Beamon jewelry and Thakoon dresses.
